I am not a smoker, but sometimes I get the urge. How do I keep my self from having a cigarette?

267>I am 18 and I do not like smoking. I believe it smells terrible. I have had many family members die of lung cancer, heart problems, etc... I have done research projects and anti-tobacco campaigns, so I know all of the negative effects. I have even held a real smoker%26#039;s lung while giving a presentation.

Occasionally, I get the desire to have a cigarette. I had my first cigarette about 6 months ago and have had a total of about 10 cigarettes. I have not smoked in over a month, and I got the urge tonight (but did not smoke).

I know I have addictive tendencies and if I start giving in to these urges, I%26#039;ll get hooked.

My question is what is an effective way to divert my attention when I get the desire to smoke?
Reply:I would say chewing sugarless gum is a great idea. Or maybe a toothpick so you have the feeling of something in your lips, just don%26#039;t choke. Keep busy with your hands like maybe a stress ball so you don%26#039;t miss the feeling of a cigarette in your hand. And of course, don%26#039;t be around people who are smoking, that way you won%26#039;t be tempted!
Reply:Look at the price..

Visit a hospice and ask questions..

Like running? (you won%26#039;t)

Like vigorous other activities? (You probably won%26#039;t)

Mention to your mom or dad what your thinking..

But I think looking at the price is the best example of why not to..
Reply:1. Smoke a bunch like 3 at the same time, to completion like an alcoholic, and make yourself SICK of it.

It is worth the price to pay that you will NEVER get the urge to smoke them again!

2. Also, people eat candies or gum when they think of smoking.
Reply:Just think of how sick it is. I mean seriously, each puff you are just slowly killing your lungs bit by bit.
