Is it "liberal" to want to protect your daughters from cervical cancer.?

137>WASHINGTON - Women for the first time have a vaccine to protect them against cervical cancer.

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved use of the vaccine, Gardasil, for use in girls and women ages 9 to 26. It works by preventing infection by four strains of the human papillomavirus, or HPV, the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease.

This cancer kills 3,700 women each year in the United States and hundreds of thousands more worldwide.

I just received this fundie answer:

%26quot;

You know, there are extremists on both sides. Didn%26#039;t some liberal government official try to make it mandatory for all elementary or middle school girls to have an anti-std vaccine of some kind? He was unsuccessful, thank God.%26quot;

The %26quot;Liberal%26quot; she means is our illustrious %26quot;constitutional ammendment defining marrige%26quot; governor Rick Perry. Liberal!!!! Please don%26#039;t make me laugh. His motivation was to prevent cancer.
Reply:Yeah, vaccines are for bleeding hearts... I want to protect the rights of those around me to die horrible painful deaths!

PS: Headsupmag, we have millions of dollars of testing that says it does indeed work, and work well, and MUCH MUCH MUCH more research that says HPV is the DIRECT cause of cervical cancer in most cases... So the data says that it prevents HPV, and the data shows HPV is responsible for 90% of cervical cancer.... Logically, this vaccine would prevent 90% of all cases of cervical cancer.
Reply:The irony is, it%26#039;s been proven that teaching %26quot;abstinence only%26quot; doesn%26#039;t work. It%26#039;s the daughters of these fundies who tell their parents they%26#039;re going to choir practice and then go to parties, have unprotected sex due to a lack of education and a desire to rebel, and get these fatal diseases. These are the very kids who need vaccinations the most.
Reply:Yea, this is old news. The Christian Right wants to keep genital warts around as an inhibitor to premarital sex. As if that has ever stopped anyone in the past! It shows you how crazy some people can get over these types of issues. Let%26#039;s not forget that there are a plethora of other incurable deadly diseases out there that can also be inhibitors to premarital sex... HIV for example. If there is a god after all i hope he isn%26#039;t as asinine as the folks representing him down here.
Reply:We really know nothing about the vaccine,or if it really works.Sounds to me like a way for the drug companies to make more money. We don%26#039;t even know if it prevents cancer,
Reply:I think the ones against this are selling chastity belts online...
Reply:We don%26#039;t know what the newer, less tested drugs etc. are doing to us in the long run, but we do have the past to learn from and the patients with Alzheimers, different palsies, you can do the research if you are honest, that stem from those prophalactic drugs that were given to them as children, and are still being given. Drugs with mercury in them. I don%26#039;t have all the details, but I know that I don%26#039;t want to put my faith in modern medicine that causes more harm than good sometimes.
Reply:I think that wanting our daughters vaccinated against a virus that can cause this awful disease does not mean that we are in any way promoting promiscuity.

They may not be teenagers when they have sex for the first time but they will at one point in their lives. We have to do all we can to protect them. The rest is up to them. Having said that, getting vaccinated against Human Papilloma Virus does not absolutely prevent one from developing cervical cancer but it definitely is one step forward!
Reply:i think its fine to give the vaccine... however what scares me, personally, is i dont know if i TRUST it... how safe is it?

and no i dont think its to stop promiscuity... that so bull ****. there are PLENTY other STDs and problems you can get from having sex.... if someone chooses to have sex one day, and made a mistake... are some people saying that these teens, adults, and yes sometimes children should get cancer?...

what about rape? if someone is raped should they get cancer?

i am more for it than against it.... like i said the only thing that makes me feel iffy about it is if its safe.
Reply:We now have to expand our political notions and our need to labelling everything with a political agenda? Is it liberal to want to protect your daughters from cervical cancer? I%26#039;m gunning on its the decent thing to do, regardless of my political stance.
Reply:Well judging by your name I would say that they were talking about our Governor. I don%26#039;t see him as liberal at all.

The one thing that wasn%26#039;t reported is that there was an opt out clause and that should have covered it. I will certainly have my daughter get the vaccine.
Reply:Is is ever %26quot;liberal%26quot; to want to protect your child from danger?

You might not want your daughter having sex before marriage, but the only way to completely control that is to have her chained to your wrist 24-7 until the wedding. And even then, how do you know that the husband isn%26#039;t a carrier of the virus?
Reply:I call it %26quot;intelligent %26amp; caring%26quot;. I don%26#039;t much care what other people choose to label it. Do you?
Reply:This would be one more evidence of your sanity not %26quot;liberalism%26quot;... *smile*
Reply:Hmm, we%26#039;re all very proud down here because Gardasil was developed by an Australian (whose name escapes me for the moment, I%26#039;m afraid). I%26#039;ve heard him speak about it on many occasions, and we had a similar fight to get it%26#039;s use approved here too - I%26#039;m fairly sure it%26#039;s going to be part of a free program from next year some time...sorry, too late to look all this stuff up.

Anyway, one of the more ridiculous arguments I heard against it was that it would discourage young women from having appropriate check-ups - as HPV isn%26#039;t present in all cervical cancers, many would go undetected until it was too late. So apparently there%26#039;s something in Gardasil which makes you stupid, too!

I hope good sense prevails in them there United States...yeah okay, who am I kidding?!
Reply:this vaccine works to it%26#039;s utmost ability in teenage girls and will protect throughout their lives. it it the same as passing out condoms in a government facility. of course not. in my opinion. I do believe people should wait until marriage and remain pure. but if they don%26#039;t they do risk the dangers associated with premarital sex. we all sin and fall short of the glory of God but forgiveness is given when truly asked for. but we still have to live with the consequences and if that is a shorter life span because of aids or some other disease we have free will to choose right from wrong. is providing your child with a vaccine that can prevent cancer later in life condoning premarital sex? I don%26#039;t think so.
Reply:some people are so childish, we were require to take the polio vaccine when i was in school, but that was like a hundred years ago, and i had already recover from polio.

if we cannot help our children, then we are not reasonable people.

sometime even liberals have a good idea.

SORRY THAT WAS JUST MY WEIRD SENCE OF HUMOR COMMING OUT.
Reply:It just upsets me that some parents would rather leave their daughters unvaccinated than to face the music about sexual behavior. It should be looked upon as a form of child abuse for a parent to withhold medical treatment from a child because of religious beliefs! If the parent is withholding treatment from themselves, that%26#039;s one thing. They%26#039;re adults who can make their own choices, but the children are another matter. Children cannot make their own choices where healthcare is concerned; parents have the responsibility to ensure the health of their children. Using their own impaired sexuality and thought processes to keep their daughters from having a vaccination that could one day save their lives is irresponsible, immoral, and criminal.
Reply:What the old, stuffy, and never going to change their ways politicians seem to have forgotten, is that we are all primitive beings, and no matter what they say or do, we will all be having sex with someone. Funny how when they get old, they forget about the horny teen years. It doesn%26#039;t matter what you teach, teenage boys have but one agenda: sex. So there is nothing wrong with vaccinating against something that will kill you in the future. We%26#039;ve been doing it for years and years already. All of those shots we got as a baby kept us from obtaining something real nasty that would kill us young. So just put this on the rotation. Everyone who thinks this will lead to sex is correct. At some point these girls will have sex. So shuty and get on with life.
Reply:It is liberal to force a girl to take the vaccine. It should be optional.
Reply:Yeh.
