177>I%26#039;m all for not hurting animals for things like shampoo and cosmetics but these extremists believe in no animal testing what so ever.
BUT...would they refuse something like an anti-cancer drug that could save thier life or that of thier child if it had been tested on animals.
Who they have the courage of thier convictions to say no
Reply:It is often alledged that all forms of animal testing could be replaced by other means. However other means are often left vague.
There are computer simulation techniques to try to select appropriate molecules but all they do is whittle dosn the list of probable compounds which might work. Some of them are int he public domain (look at http://www.grid.org/download/gold/downlo... soem are complex private modelling tools.
But they are not comprhensive. I have friends who work for the Pharmaceutical Industry * medics, all without exception say there is no way they would trust a new compund that hadn%26#039;t been tested before use. They are open about how it can be tested, but make the point that the human body is a complex mechanism, it cannot be simulated by computer, nor by cellular level trials. sometimes the side effecxts (and most compounds do have side effects) are seen in other parts of the body than expected, or can
be more severe than predicted.
I don%26#039;t think there is anyone who would condone testing of cosmetics and beauty products on animals (which are relativel easy to test on human volunteers, after all skin cells can be effectively tested, but pharamceutical compounds?
There may be a day when such compounds can be tested entirely in a computer, but I don%26#039;t think its any where near there (yet). Simply we do not have enough information to create a realistic simulation model. Even so I%26#039;d still be very reluctant to be the first user of such a compound.
Reply:ANIMAL RIGHTS all the way!!! omg. i%26#039;m in love with the A.L.F. If you don%26#039;t belive in them then you are a heartless idiot! GO THEM! Report It
Reply:The thing is pete, these drugs could have produced using alternative methods (no animals involved) but the government refuses to fund that because of vested interests by the drug companies.
It%26#039;s sad and it is why many of these extremists are driven to do what they do... which is reality is nothing compared to the horrible torture inflicted on these poor animals.
But please remember 90% of animal activists are peaceful people and don%26#039;t believe in resorting to terror tactics.
Reply:Man this is one of the roughes questions I%26#039;ve red so far. In this case the scientists are faced with a dilemma: they should choose whether they will harm an animal by testing the drugs on them, or harm innocent people with the tests.
I can say to all the animal protectors: think about it what is better? Your child diing because a medicine was not properly tested in advance (or your child is actually a test subject in some way) or they test the chemicals on rats and other animals instead.
It is also interesting that sometimes animal tests prove that a medicine is ok, still it%26#039;s effect is different in case of people (or just some individuals).
I think that the meds shall be tested on living creatures (both animals and people), after other testing possibilities where used and they would not provide more info.
On the other hand, if we are strict, we can say that the bacteria which we want to kill with the medicine is also a living thing, should we protect the bacteria too?
Reply:ALF are a load of psycho crackpots. They%26#039;d rather kill someone or let someone die than see an animal used for testing. Every movement has it%26#039;s extremists and their cause, whatever it is, outweighs all other factors.
I would not want a drug or surgical technique used on me if it had only been tested on a cell culture or a computer programme.
Reply:Come off it man, look at it this way, If my Mum was dying and the way to save her was by harming animals, i would happily go into a field and kill every cow, pig, sheep, dog, ferret, mouse and any more you could think of to save her. Fair enough, testing cosmetics on animals is out of order, but when it comes to curing diseases or even preventing them in the first place, Im all for experimenting on them.

Is it right for the governor of Texas order vaccine for girls?
176>Why does he believe it%26#039;s his choose to make them take anti-cancer vacination, does he know of any long term side affects does anyone???
Reply:Absolutely not, for several reasons:
1. This vaccine is new and I personally don%26#039;t think it%26#039;s been around long enough to be confident it%26#039;s safe in the long run, especially for girls who haven%26#039;t hit puberty yet. (The vaccine can be given to girls as young as 9.)
2. HPV does not affect the general population in the way ALL the other diseases with vaccination requirements do. The rest are airborne illnesses or easily contracted from normal human contact. HPV is sexually transmitted and easily prevented by using condoms or by not having sexual contact with people who are infected. It%26#039;s not like this vaccine is the only line of defense.
3. This is a ridiculously overpriced vaccine. The drug companies are trying to hype it and make it that kind of requirement NOT because HPV is a potential epidemic, but because they are going to get very very rich if they can get states to require it. Most people probably don%26#039;t know that this vaccine is a 3-dose series at $120 PER INJECTION. That%26#039;s $360 for a vaccine most girls don%26#039;t need, most insurance doesn%26#039;t cover (and if it does it covers less than half), many parents can%26#039;t afford, and many health providers aren%26#039;t stocking because of this insane and unjustified price tag. Think of the parents in Texas who are already on public assistance programs who all of a sudden have to shell out $360 per daughter for this.
I do not believe in premarital sex, but I also don%26#039;t think that vaccinating a young girl against this disease would make her think, %26quot;great, I can have sex now.%26quot; I think that%26#039;s probably the weakest argument against vaccinating teen girls against this virus, but there are plenty of other valid arguments that this needs to be the parents%26#039; choice.
We definitely don%26#039;t need to start making this mandatory. The only way to get the price down on this vaccine is to send the message to the drug company that people are going to elect not to be vaccinated at this cost, otherwise they have no motivation to lower their price.
Reply:Well I think he has good intentions...Since there are so many teenagers out there having sex without taking appropriate precautions. I don%26#039;t really think he should be given the authority to force these girls to have the vaccination. Studies show that protecting yourself against HPV can ultimate aid in avoiding cervical cancer, but that does not mean that studies down the road will not show that there is something wrong with the vaccine. It seems like lately all kinds of drugs and vaccines are proving to do more harm than good. Ultimately this is something that needs to be addressed by parents, and not legislators.
Reply:NO! It%26#039;s not right at all! This is a matter of choice for the girls and their parents or guardians.
Reply:thats like people complaining that theres flouride in the water to help us have strong teeth. for some reason people don%26#039;t want what is good for em.
on the other hand, it should be a parents choice, i%26#039;m assuming that this is taken at an early age.
hmmmm.
Reply:Is it right for every state in the union to require childern have DPT vaccinations prior to being allowed to enter school?
Rick Perry isn%26#039;t forcing this issue, he even is giving an out to parents who are convinced their children are going to remain virgins until marriage because of the wonderful religious upbringing they are being given.
Reply:WOW. That is rediculous. Everyone should be able to choose whether or not they want to get the vaccine. No one knows the long term side effects, and we won%26#039;t for many years. If someone has a bad reaction from it, there%26#039;s no way to get it out of your system. This topic is highly related to ordering childhood vaccinations. People should be able to do what they want with their bodies, within rational limits.
Reply:He is doing something positive for young women. They will not receive the injection without parental permission. I can%26#039;t imagine why any parent would not want their daughter to receive a vaccine that could prevent cancer from HPV.
Reply:Well, he didn%26#039;t really order it. If a parent doesn%26#039;t want them to have the vaccine, they don%26#039;t have to take their child to get it. But, what will happen is now it will be mandatory to have this vaccine in order to continue in school. You don%26#039;t have to get your kids immunized at all if you do not want to. But, you will have to home school them as they will not be allowed to enter daycare or any school.
The vaccine will be adminstered prior to entering the 6th grade, at age 11. If a child is advance a year, then they would not take until they are 11.
Could there be side effects to this vaccine, yes. There were side effects to the polio vaccine that was taken orally when I was a child. It was a live vaccine. That is why the vaccine is now given in a shot.
As far as this making kids think it is now ok to have sex. That is the same argument that people who want abstinence only sex education tought. They think by teaching about sex, it will lead to kids having sex. This argument is not valid. Teens are going to have sex with or without the vaccine. It is time for some people to get in touch with reality. Teens have sex. Not all of them, but many do. A vaccine, or handing out condoms, or teaching about safe sex isn%26#039;t going to make them. And not doing any of that stuff is going to stop them either.
Reply:Yes. One of the authorities and responsibilities of states is to help ensure the public health. Classic examples:
States can and do order the use of Chlorine in public water systems to reduce water born disease. They also can and do order the use of Fluoride in water to reduce tooth decay.
States currently have on the books laws requiring immunizations from a number of diseases at birth and prior to entering school. Immunization programs do not work if only a few people are immunized. When the Salk vaccine first became available, there were massive immunizations all over the USA to the extent that today, if a child gets polio, it is most likely due to neglect by the parents.
The order for the new vaccine in Texas is in keeping with the States authority and responsibility for the public health. It is not an order for an %26quot;anti-cancer vaccine%26quot; but rather an order for a vaccine against an infectious disease that is responsible for 70% of the cervical cancer in women.
It will do no good for the general health and welfare of the citizens of Texas if only some women get the vaccine. The ones who did not get immunized will spread the disease.
As far as long term side effects, nothing is 100% safe. However, this vaccine, like all other vaccines is far better than getting the disease. People in the USA have become so unaccustomed to having serious epidemics, they think it can not happen to them, so argue about off-the-wall long term possibilities instead of looking at the facts.
Reply:Has anyone heard of the Swine Flu?
In 1976 more people died from the vaccination for the swine flu than died from the swine flu itself. Who knows how many suffered for the rest of their lives.
The FDA just approved this vaccine. If you trust the FDA get the shot. If not, move out of that state.
I%26#039;d be moving!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Reply:The Centers for Disease Control has added the HPV vaccine to the 2007 Immunization Schedule for Persons Aged 7鈥?8 Years. This addition has been approved by the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices. As much as I don%26#039;t like Rick Perry (even though I am Republican living in Texas) and as much as I despise the idea that he might get some type of illegal and under-the-table compensation by Merck for being the HPV poster boy, I believe he is within his power as the governor of Texas to require the vaccine. All the approval testing has been done and follow-up research will continue to be done, but the CDC has approved it and added it to the list of recommended immunizations. All of the other states will follow suit quickly and it will soon be a non-issue. As mentioned in another answer, arrangements have been made so that parents can opt out of the vaccination.

Cannabis and faith?
175>hello to all, please i dont mean to offend any christian here, but, i believe in God, and i belive what he tells us is true and undeniable, and i smoke cannabis because i believe he made the herb with a purpose for our benefit. i respect all his creation, i reject tobacco because they have included chemicals which are not supposed to be there, but as a cannabis researcher, i know its healthy and its anti-cancer, do you consider me as an evil person?
Reply:Not evil. You are being disobedient to God though. He said we are to obey the laws of the government. He also says that we should not harm the body which cannabis does.

I think alcohol is ok but personally dont like the feel of being drunk. Mj has great med purposes, is very helpful in anxiety disorders and cancer.
Really it comes down to moderation. Anything in moderation is fine. But when it comes to the point that you cant put it down, you have a problem.
It could be considered wrong bc it is illegal in most places in the US. But as far as being evil and some other things ppl say about mj is wrong.

Science question?
173>an anti-cancer drug was given to 50 patients, while 50 more were given a placebo. all the patients were in the advanced stage of their desiease, and had life expectancies of 3 months, 25 of the patients with the placebo had died, and only 10 of the patients with the drug died. was this clinical trial a %26#039;sucess%26#039;. why or why not?
i dont really like this question, its kinda sad
Reply:In glancing at your question it looks to be a success. Was it a blind or double blind trial. If not a double blind the physician administering the drugs has the ability to have prejudice in selecting the patient. If double blind then it looks like the drug is on the right track. A more detailed trail, with a larger pool is required for better results.
In regards to the question, are you in school, and this was a question asked.
Reply:It appears at first blush that the trial was a success. But it is only one trial. Many more have to be performed before real success is declared. A double blind study is the most definitive.
Reply:Beware of taking one small study as an answer as random factors may play a greater role than any drug effect. Also no time was mentioned in the above information, whilst the drug may have an early effect on the death-rate it may re-establish itself later on. Like any research on terminal illness success is a relative term

Does/Can cumin cause B.O. (body odor)?
172>I just started using cumin for seasoning and because of its anti-cancer properties. But I%26#039;m wondering, wil I stink after regular usage since it sort of smells like B.O.? Just curious.
Thanks.
Reply:This probably has a lot to do with your own personal body chemistry as much as it does with what cumin smells like.
For instance, my husband loves Greek food but there is some seasoning common in Greek cuisine that makes him, literally, stink, for approx. 24 hours after eating it. I can barely stand to be near him then, and brushing his teeth and showering don%26#039;t help - he just has to wait until it wears off. However, other people can (and do!) eat the exact same Greek meal as he does, and I can%26#039;t detect any peculiar smell on them at all.
The only way you can know for sure how it is going to affect you, is to eat some, then ask a trusted friend or family member to smell you and be honest about whether you smell offensive or not. You may want to have them smell you %26quot;pre-cumin%26quot; so that they have something to compare with, too...

Reply:Not positive about cumin, but curry does.
Reply:I think that the type of food you eat does create body odor. Your body excretes through sweat etc. Cumin is really strong so I think it would cause odor. I know garlic does!
Reply:hiya!!! actually being a cook who specialises in indian cuisine at home!! well lets say a bit of an expert when it cums from some one who has used all sorts of spices!! Fenugreek comes both in seed form and in leaf form and trust me after eating a dominated meal of this you will surely be scrubbing your armpits!! hope its of help!! Did you know that you can add ground cumin in plain lassi with some salt!! this taste refrehing during a spicey meal!!
Reply:I don%26#039;t know, but just take regular showers OR you can have someone sniff you a few hours after you have cummin. Work up a sweat first.
Reply:I lived in Sri Lanka for almost two years, and I never noticed that eating cumin or curry changes (or enhances) my odor. I did notice, however, that even though I ate the same food as the locals, when I was on a hot, crowded bus, I did not smell the same as they did. My theory: when you sweat, you stink, no matter what you eat. The type of smell is more related to genetics than to diet.
Reply:I dont know about cumin either. But I know that when I make guacamole with LOTS of garlic, I%26#039;m literally oozing it. Breath, and I%26#039;m pretty sure when I sweat. This last for about a day or two.......even with showering and teeth brushing.
Reply:No, Cumin does not cause BO what it does is ruin you food if you put too much of it, is just like cinnamon a little goes a long way!
Anyway, hope this helps.

Is it right for the governor of Texas order vaccine for girls?
171>Why does he believe it%26#039;s his choose to make them take anti-cancer vacination, does he know of any long term side affects does anyone???
Reply:He cannot force girls to have the vaccine, all he can do it make it available should they choose to.
Reply:This therapy is way too new to know what, if any, long-term risks are associated with its use. No, government does not have the right to dictate the use of drugs/vaccines - especially when NO ONE knows the long-term risks or benefits!
Reply:This is a double edge sword. He wants to make sure the girls in Tx are safe from getting a virus that will cause cancer and can be deadly because cerivical cancer is not easily detected. The virus is transmitted thru sexual contact. So, on the other hand, he%26#039;s saying that he knows the girls are going to mess around anyway, so he better protect them early in middle school before they start messing around.
As far as the side effects and long term effects, I%26#039;m sure the FDA has studied this to no end and feel it is safe.
I don%26#039;t believe Gov Perry should mandate it. He can make it a requirement for attending public schools, like with all the other vaccinations required. I think this one should be a personal choice.
Reply:I live in Texas it is available for the ones who want it. It is not mandatory to take the vaccination. I wish they had it sooner. My daughter is 21 when she was 18 she had cervical cancer. She had one surgery to remove part of her cervix did not get it all then the Dr had to freeze the rest of the cancer cells. I am all for anything that will help fight against cancer!!!!!!
Reply:The very nature of community health goes against the grain of individuality. The governor%26#039;s goal is to all but eliminate cervical cancer and save lives. For the public, this is great. To the individual, this seems intrusive. All I know is that Americans are no longer suffering from small pox, polio, etc. the way they were 100 years ago.
Reply:Is this not a voluntary option? That is how i understood it to be. The option is available ( where once it was not) for women to have access to the vaccine. If you decide that it is not for you then that is your choice.
The only problem I see is that if the vacine is or was avaiable to any individual who refused or abstained and later was found to have the problem. Could the authorities refuse to provide insured medical treatment to that individual?.
Reply:It is just another vaccine like all the other vaccines that school children take. I think if it will help prevent a disease like cancer, we should all welcome it. Lots of women don%26#039;t have regular screening for cervical cancer so this is one more weapon in the fight against cancer. We didn%26#039;t know the long term effects of polio, rubella, dyptheria and german measles%26#039; shots when we agreed to take them, so why would this be any different?
Reply:totally against it for myself and if i had girls. vaccines can create a whole new set of issues regarding health in the long run.

I need information on apples!?
169>Im doing a project for advanced higher biology and its due in tomorrow first thing! Only I just realised that I have not finished my introduction. It needs to be about two pages long. It consists of background information. My project is investigating the effect of age and temperature on the volume of juice produce by apples. I have already covered Anti-cancer and Antioxident properties of natural chemicals in apples and the storage of apples but that only covers one page and I dont know what else to write about. Does anyone have any suggestions about what to write about apples that is relevent. Your help will be greatly appreciated.

Reply:temperature increases enzyme activity, breaks down pectin and cellulose in apple skin and cell walls, releasing juice, therefore more juice released when incubated at higher temperatures (eg if test tube of apple pulp plus enzyme solution put in a water bath set at different temperatures, you can then leave it in the bath for say 30 mins, take it out and pour the pulp through a filter, and see how much juice is produced in a certain time. amount will increase with temperature up to about 45 degrees C, after which enzymes will denature)
as apple gets older the cell walls break down, and so like with temperature, more juice produced.

Is there a way of cooking Brussels Sprouts that makes them good to eat?
167>The only way we know of is boiling or steaming them. It%26#039;s horrid, my wife agrees, but thinks they are a great anti cancer food.
Reply:Cut brussel sprouts in half (or use really tiny ones) and spread them on a cookie sheet with a little olive oil and a lot of crushed garlic. Bake in the oven at about 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes (or until done).
Reply:Steam them, but put some garlic powder in the water first.
Serve with shredded cheddar cheese - awesome!!!
And BTW, fresh are way better than frozen. :)
Reply:YUCK, I hate them.
There are OTHER anti-cancer foods that taste good, you know--like broccoli, salmon, and blueberries, to name a few.
Reply:Your wife can do the same thing will Brussels Sprouts that she does for broccoli. I prefer them steamed myself, but you could use a cheese sauce or do this
1 lb fresh brussels sprouts
4-6 Tbsp butter
1/2 onion, chopped
Salt and Pepper
1 teaspoon lemon juice or 1 Tbsp Meyer lemon juice, fresh squeezed
1/4 cup toasted slivered almonds *optional*
1 Boil in water or steam brussels sprouts for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Split one open to see if it has cooked to the middle. Strain and place in a bowl of ice water to keep the color bright green. Cut into halves.
2 Saut茅 onions in 2-3 Tbsp of butter in a wide saut茅 pan until the onions are translucent. Add the brussels sprout halves and 2-3 Tbsp more of butter and cook on medium high heat for several more minutes, until the sprouts have reached your desired level of doneness. Add salt and pepper to taste while the sprouts are cooking. Whatever you do, do not over-cook, as the sprouts will be bitter.
3 Remove from heat, toss in half of the toasted slivered almonds and the lemon juice. Add salt and pepper if needed. Put into serving dish and garnish with the rest of the toasted almonds.
Reply:Put a spoon of sugar in the water when you are boiling the Brussels
sprouts! When they are boiled do a litlle butter on it. It is anti cancer food like all the vegetables and fruit!!! like they say at home;eat a apple every day, keeps illness away!
Reply:They can also be baked with a drizzle of oil for about 40 minutes or served with a cheese sauce. Add some chopped bacon for extra flavour.
Reply:The trick with brussel sprouts is to only buy the fresh ones. Also, the smaller ones are sweeter than the larger ones. They tend to get that bitter after-taste when they get too big. Also pick off the top layer of leaves - they get chewy as they dry out when exposed to the air. I hope this helps you enjoy them more. I just steam them with a little salt and lemon pepper. Yummy!
Reply:Boil or steam them, then add butter and cheese!

Have heavy recreational pot smokers ever considered information such as this?
166>In in-vitro experiments THC at extremely high concentrations, which could not be reached with commonly consumed doses, caused inhibition of plaque formation, the cause of Alzheimer%26#039;s disease, better than currently approved drugs.[15]
THC may also be an effective anti-cancer treatment, with studies showing tumor reduction in mice, conducted in 1975.[16]
In early May 2007, British Doctors released a study that linked THC to psychotic episodes (paranoid delusions and hallucinations) in healthy test subjects. Another study conducted at Yale University showed similar results in healthy subjects, but also included a schizophrenic group. The effect on the schizophrenics was so profound that it merited cancellation of the study due to fear that it would be unethical to continue. [17]

Marijuana is the only drug that eases glaucoma pain, nausea from chemotherapy, inhibits growth of cancer cells; aids in diabetic induced nausea, chronic diahhrea, low and high blood pressure, bi-polar disorder.
Name one other drug that has all these therapeutic benefits, and then answer me why it is illegal.

Reply:My bf was a heavy pot smoker and i defiantly believe all of that is true. He has been diagnosed as Schitzopheranic and has had some physchotic episodes, the only problem with that information is that once they quit the phycs and doctors wil put them on an anti psychotic for a few months then take them off it when they have fully detoxed and most of the time there schitzopherania or psychosis is drug induced and by the time the drug is out of there body, the schitzipherania is completely gone and they can lead a normal life. The psych that my bf saw actually told us that he has seen over 100 people with drug problems come in with these sorta of issues and then as soon as they get off the drug and fully detox all there mental health issues are completely gone, which is good. Im not condoning drugs at all, i completely hate them, and ive seen first hand what they can do.

It%26#039;s long been know that marijuana has many medicinal benefits that no other drug could achieve.

Can one file for a utility patent for a drug, after the original patent has expired?
165>For example, can I file for a utility patent for Tylenol as an anti-cancer drug? (just an example) Would this be beneficial financially?
Reply:Good question.
A new use for an old drug can be patented. However, your patent would only give you a monopoly on the new use. You could not stop others from selling the drug for the old use. This might be enough of a loophole to render your new patent worthless. A good patent attorney might be able to close some of those loopholes.
The decision to pursue patents, which kind and how much to spend is a business decision that merits consideration and planning. Getting patents can be quite expensive; defending them can be frightfully expensive. These costs scare off many people, though the smarter businesspeople usually get patents because they can give you valuable leverage and options.
Although you can apply for patentt yourself you will probably regret it later. But then, you could spend $25k+ with a patent attorney and regret it, too. Patent services are like medical care. Cutting costs now can result in huge costs later. Often, you won%26#039;t know about the problems until later, and by that time the situation is irreversible. The cost for a typical US patent, from start to finish, is typically between $10,000 and $30,000.
The patent process is like a tennis match. To get a normal, US %26quot;utility%26quot; application prepared and filed (%26quot;serving the tennis ball%26quot;) you are probably looking at spending $5-20k on an attorney depending on the kind of invention.
About 1-4 years after you serve, the patent office will return the serve. You will have additional costs for hitting the ball back. When the patent office agrees to grant the patent, there are additional costs for the final processing. All told, after filing the application, the follow-on costs are typically in the $1,500-15,000 range (depending on lots of factors).
The US patent process typically takes 1-7 years. The current published average is almost 3 1/2 years.
There%26#039;s also the option of an informal provisional application, which typically runs $2,000 or less. The provisional expires in 12 months and there%26#039;s no tennis match. Provisionals generally don%26#039;t provide much protection, but they are great to get %26quot;patent pending%26quot;, to establish a date of invention, and to set deadlines for making a formal application.
Lots of people like to file provisionals to get their feet wet and during initial market tests. If it looks like the product will sell then they decide whether to pursue a real patent.
A %26quot;prior art%26quot; search should be one of your first steps in the patent process. In the US, the prior art mostly includes (a) any patent filed prior to your invention, (b) any publication (e.g, magazine article, web page), published more than one year prior to when you file your patent application, (c) any public use, sale or offer to sale of the invention by you or anyone else in the US more than one year before you filed your patent application. There are some other categories -- the patent laws are filled with gotchas. From these three categories, you can see that even if someone else hasn%26#039;t gotten a patent on your invention (or if they did and it expired), you still might not get a patent either.
The patent law also has gotchas on deadlines. The US and foreign laws favor early filings. Tread carefully here. If you file the application too late, you might lose US and/or foreign rights. Most foreign countries have %26quot;absolute novelty%26quot; rules, which bar patenting if there has been any kind of disclosure of the invention anywhere. The US has a one-year grace period on the absolute novelty rule. The rules are quite complex so don%26#039;t rely on this simplification. The safest approach is usually to file your patents prior to any kind of public disclosure or attempt at commercialization.
Now, back to searching. Before you spend the money to hire someone else, try doing some searching on your own. Use a search engine such as Yahoo to see if there is (or was) anything out there like your invention, or articles which are on point. You should also use the patent database of the US Patent %26amp; Trademark Office www.uspto.gov to search issued patents and published applications. Most people search and find nothing, but at least it%26#039;s a good start.
While there are still some professional prior art searchers, it seems like most people just have their patent attorney do the search. It is usually more efficient and accurate.
Be sure to pick a patent attorney who has some familiarity with your technology. We patent attorneys usually specialize. You probably don%26#039;t want a software expert searching on a new pharmaceutical.
Patentability requires that your invention be new, and also that it is something more than an obvious variation or modification of the prior art. The US courts and the USPTO are getting tougher on the obviousness standard.
These estimates are budgeting guidelines based upon having a competent patent attorney doing the work, and include the government fees and other costs. You can look up the government fees at www.uspto.gov
Though you only asked about patents, you should ask your IP attorney about copyrights and trademarks, too. Many products can be protected by copyright and trademark in addition to patent.
Hope this helps. My email address is public. -Steve
Reply:no it must be different. most drug makers just add another chemical into the original and bingo another patent.

Project management or business development?
164>I hold a Ph.D. in Cancer Medicine and worked for 3 years as a R%26amp;D scientist screening novel anti-cancer drugs. I pursued my MBA and finished my degree less than one year ago. Since completing my MBA, I took up a position at a large pharmaceutical service provider identifying risks in study protocols (for clients) through global investigator surveys and help pepare material for proposals and bid defense meeting (for internal use).
I like my position but would like to use my MBA skills more and am planning to look for other positions in 6-9 months time.
Given my background, I am thinking I would be suitable as a clinical project manager or in business development. I believe business development jobs will lead to more oppurtunities later on.
Is that correct? Also, what is the career path of a project manager in the pharma sector?
I would be interested in your views!
Thank you!
Reply:Hi,
I have been working as a business development in a biotech company. My daily role was as following:
1- researching the market to find out potential customers
2- cold calling the leads and leading them to opportunities.
3- optimising the contracts and communicating with CSOs and CEOs of the biotech/pharma companies.
4- following up the payment with the finance department of client and our own company.
5- Updating the salesforce, which is a website specifically designed as the client-customer database resource.
The next step was my manager who was technically %26quot;the business development manager%26quot; and he was involved in generating new potential customers by travelling around the world, having meetings, and conducting presentations.
I%26#039;m not sure how much he was earning, but I am sure, he was getting comission for his sales.
The role of my friend as a project manager, was more like organising conferences, and meetings as well as data entry. She had nothing to do with the sales itself, but she was mainly the %26quot;communicator%26quot;.
Whatever you choose, wish you luck.

What are some negatives to taking Conjugated Linoleic Acid supplements? (CLA)?
162>I have read a lot of benefits to this...from weightloss to anti-cancer fighting--like lowering risk for colon cancer. Occasionally I get an article with some negatives that contradict what I have read--for example with cholesterol. Is there any Private or State funding for Seniors who enter the Coverage Gap?
161>I work for BlueRx and have Sr. call all day telling me they have already entered the Coverage Gap...I am thinking Holy Crap it is the Second of Feb. They have two options go with out their prescriptions all year...or come up with the $3600. Some do and some don%26#039;t qualify for Low income assistance. But from what I have found in my research online, there is no hope unless you qualify for Low income assistance. So the message is...be poor and be sick is okay...have assets or retirement with a value more than 20,000 a yr. and get sick and no one is going to help you...Our Enhanced plan does cover thru the gap but only on generic drugs...and 90% of cancer drugs don%26#039;t have a generic...only 20% of Anti cancer drugs have an oral substitute that you can claim on Medicare Part B instead of counting towards the Gap on Part D

What is the best food to help aid chemotherapy?

i%26#039;ve read that pomegranite(sp?) has amazing anti-cancer properties.

Go all organic foods. Period. Nothing processed.

Can someone please give some info on OLIGOMERIC PROANTHOCYANIDIN (OPC).?
159>Heard its the latest buzz-word amongst scientists regarding anti-oxidants, immunomodulators and anti-cancer therapy.
Reply:Oligomeric proanthocyanidins or OPCs are a class of flavonoid complexes found in grape seeds and skin, that act as antioxidants (free radical scavengers) in the human body.
Thus, OPCs may help protect against the effects of internal and environmental stresses (such as cigarette smoking, pollution, and supporting normal body metabolic processes). The effects may include depressing blood fat, emolliating blood vessels, lowering blood pressure, preventing blood vessel scleroses, dropping blood viscidity and preventing thrombus formation (a type of platelet clot).
Additionally, studies have shown that OPCs may prevent cardiovascular disease by counteracting the negative effects of high cholesterol on the heart and blood vessels.
A number of grape seed oil vendors have claimed that grape seed oil is high in OPCs. However independent studies have indicated that grape seed oil is actually the grape product with the lowest concentration of OPCs. This is because OPCs are polar molecules which have very low solubility in nonpolar solvents such as oils. However OPCs are available from fresh grapes, grape juice, and red wine. Although in milligrams per ounce red wine may contain more OPCs than red grape juice, red grape juice contains more OPCs per average serving size. An 8 ounce serving of grape juice averages 124 milligrams OPCs, while a 5 ounce serving of red wine averages 91 milligrams.[1][2] Many other foods and beverages also contain high amounts of OPCs, but very few come close to the levels found in red grape seeds and skins (which readily disperse into grape juice when crushed).[1]
Proanthocyanidins-also called %26quot;OPCs%26quot; for oligomeric proanthocyanidins and %26quot;PCOs%26quot; for procyanicolic oligomers are a class of nutrients belonging to the bioflavonoid family. Some researchers also call these molecules %26quot;pycnogenol.%26quot; The main functions of proanthocyanidins are antioxidant activity, stabilization of collagen, and maintenance of elastin-two critical proteins in connective tissue, blood vessels and muscle.
Proanthocyanidins have antioxidant activity and they play a role in the stabilization of collagen and maintenance of elastin鈥攖wo critical proteins in connective tissue that support organs, joints, blood vessels, and muscle. Possibly because of their effects on blood vessels, proanthocyanidins have been reported in double-blind research to reduce the duration of edema after face-lift surgery from 15.8 to 11.4 days. In preliminary research, proanthocyanidins were reported to have anti-mutagenic activity (i.e., to prevent chromosomal mutations).
The most common antioxidants currently used are vitamin C and vitamin E; however, studies show that proanthocyanidins antioxidant capabilities are 20 times more powerful than vitamin C and 50 times more potent than vitamin E. An important supplement, the proanthocyanidins found in pine bark and grape seed extract work directly to help strengthen all the blood vessels and improve the delivery of oxygen to the cells. Doctor recommended as anti-oxidants, they have become increasingly more important as our environment deteriorates through the introduction of toxins from pollution. Proanthocyanidins also have an affinity for cell membranes, providing nutritional support to reduce capillary permeability and fragility. Although bioflavonoids are widespread in nature, the powerful proanthocyanidin compound is most abundant and available from the bark of the maritime pine and in grape seeds, or pips.
- By inhibiting these enzymes, proanthocyanidins reduce histamine production naturally, eliminating the need for man-made antihistamines and their side-effects; therefore, proanthocyandidins are used in the treatment of allergies.
- Proanthocyanidins help improve circulation. Tissues require a blood supply for their nutrition and for repair purposes in the event of injury. Also, all tissues, whether injured or healthy, produce waste products. These waste products need to be efficiently removed from the tissues. Nutrition is provided by and waste removal is accomplished by capillaries, which are the smallest blood vessels in our body. To do these functions properly, the capillaries must be healthy. Proanthocyanidins strengthen capillary walls, therefore improving circulation. This is especially important for people with compromised circulatory systems, such as stroke victims, diabetics, arthritics, smokers, oral contraceptive users and people with general cardiovascular insufficiencies.
- Proanthocyanidins inhibit the body鈥檚 enzymes that break down collagen. All cells connect to one another with strong fibers called collagen. Proanthocyanidins help collagen repair and rebuild correctly which can reverse damage done over the years by injury and free radical attack. The breakdown of collagen is what causes our skin to lose its elasticity which in turn causes wrinkles. Proanthocyanidins help keep skin elastic, smooth and wrinkle-free. Proanthocyanidins are also taken as an oral cosmetic to help in the prevention of wrinkles.
- Proanthocyanidins serve to protect against environmental toxins, such as radiation, pesticides, pollution, heavy metals, etc. The production of free radicals is increased because of today%26#039;s environment. Tobacco smoke, alcohol, solvents, chemicals and more cause free radicals to form. Since proanthocyanidins eliminate free radicals, they help us fight the toxic effects of our environment.
- Proanthocyanidins act as a natural, internal sunscreen. The Sun%26#039;s ultraviolet rays destroy up to 50 percent of our skin cells. Proanthocyanidins reduce this amount to approximately 15 percent. Inhibiting the daily effects the Sun%26#039;s rays have on our skin is our best defense against the aging of our skin.
- Proanthocyanidins cross the blood-brain barrier to protect the blood vessels in the brain. Unlike most other nutritional supplements, the beneficial effects of proanthocyanidins cross the blood-brain barrier. This enables proanthocyanidins to fight free radicals in the vessels of the brain that in turn will help them remain healthy. This can result in increased mental acuity, a decreased potential for stroke, and possibly in fighting senility. Grape seed extract can also be obtained in Function Youth Trip which is a popular beverage in California
Hindus Cow-Urine therapy?
158>Since time immeorial Cow-Urine (go-mutra) distillate had been used by Hindus as a bio-enhancer of anti-infective, anti-cancer agents and nutrients

Soon the world will know the truth about Hinduism.
What is your stand on this??

This is really funny. Pharmaceutical companies are always looking for things that are active agents like this. They have examined soil from Easter Island as well as urine from pregnant horses. These examinations have led to some really great drugs and billions in profits. Given that there are indeed BILLIONS of dollars to be made in these cures, it always amazes me that something that could be so simple like cow piss is not being produced by someone commercially if it shows the effectivity that these nuts claim it does. Kind of makes you think don%26#039;t it?
Personally, It makes me think that there is no truth in these claims.

Vegetables for Strong Bones?
156>My sister told me about someone in her company, a lady who came down with cancer, and this lady was put on a special anti-cancer vegetarian diet. This special diet was completely meatless and also it was not like most vegetarian diets -- it was certain vegetables selected specifically for fighting cancer.
Well, this diet made all cancer cells in her body go away, and also she finally slimmed down, from being somewhat chubby before. You see, without meat in her diet, the vegetarian diet significantly reduced her appetite.
Most significantly, at least for the purposes of this question, is this: her bones and fingernails/toenails became rock hard. That%26#039;s what I want to know about.
Which vegetables do I need to eat regularly to get strong bones and nails? And do I need to go meatless for that to happen? (Does having meat in the diet cause you not to be able to build strong bones, like if perhaps if it blocks the absorption of calcium?)
Thanks,
C.L.
Reply:Kale is notorious for its calcium as are sesame seeds ! Pretty much the leafy/ dark greens have some amount of calcium, ie brocolli and spinach. Also, contrary to popular belief, milk and dairy steal the calcium from your bones to help break down and process the protien found in milk!
Reply:thats interesting if true(not saying you are lying just new to me) do you know how long she was on the diet and what kind of cancer she had. because i know of foods that help prevent but not really of it curing.
p.s. tea is suppose to be awesome for fighting cancer i made a video about it for a scholarship(didnt win though)

anyways to answer your question too much meat(more specifically protein) does affect the calcium in your body. an excessive protein intake may also cause the body to lose calcium.

How do you feel about the FDA legislating what we eat??
155>In the past, I jokingly said that broccoli might someday be banned as soon as the public begins to learn about the potent anti-cancer chemicals found in the vegetable. That鈥檚 because, as I jested, the FDA wouldn鈥檛 want people treating their own cancer with the anti-cancer medicines found in cruciferous vegetables. But it seems that my joke wasn鈥檛 so funny after all, because the FDA is now threatening cherry growers with raids to confiscate their cherries, haul them into court, and put them out of business for doing one simple thing that the FDA cannot stand to allow: The distribution of scientific information describing the health benefits of cherries.

According to the Family Food Protection Act of 1995 (S.515), Section 2: %26quot;meat and meat food products, and poultry and poultry products, contaminated with pathogenic bacteria are a leading cause of foodborne illness.%26quot; The bill also states that foodborne illnesses take approximately 9,000 lives, and cause between 6.5 and 80 million illnesses, each year. According to USDA Secretary Dan Glickman, 500 deaths a year are attributable to E.coli contamination in beef.
By concealing a hidden camera on his body, an employee of a Rapid City, SD slaughterhouse was able to obtain a videotape for CBS-TV%26#039;s 48 Hours. The tape showed how a plant with over 300 employees that processes an average of 50 cows per hour with only 4 USDA inspectors %26quot;keeps the line moving.%26quot; It showed workers taking dangerous shortcuts in cleaning up fluid that had broken out of an abscess from a piece of chuck beef, a severe violation of USDA rules that would require an extended clean-up procedure. Comments from a seasoned USDA veterinarian: %26quot;I can say from my experience of nine years and in talking to other food inspectors around the country, this probably goes on on a daily basis.%26quot;
Nearly half the fish tested in a 6-month investigation by Consumers Union were found to be contaminated by bacteria from human or animal feces, suspected to be the result of poor sanitation practices at one or more points along the fish handling process
Of all the antibiotics administered in the US to people or farm animals, farm animals receive over 95% of them--not so much to treat infection, but to make the animals grow faster on less feed
A US Congressional committee report, published in 1985, charged that there were 20-30 thousand animal drugs in use at the time, and that as many as 90% had not been approved by the FDA.
Bacteria in meat and poultry processing is a constant concern, and a very big business. The proliferation of antibacterial rinses (chlorine and saline) and sprays (for cow udders), as well as steam pasteurization (beef), ammonia neutralizers (poultry litter) and contaminant vacuums--just to name a few, all serve to allow the meat and poultry industries the luxury of cheap and filthy operations. A USDA-approved pilot test of a chemical de-hairing process went into effect in early 1996. The procedure--which will give stunned cattle a burning, bacteria-eliminating shave before slaughter--will probably prove effective in the pilot test. In practice, however, the chance for a percentage of still-sentient animals being chemically burned will most certainly exist.
Late in 1995, the FDA put into place new rules pertaining to the regulation of fish processing. The rules require the FDA to inspect each of the nation%26#039;s 6,000 processing plants, at most once per year and as little as once every three years, at which time a few samples may be taken for later evaluation. Individual fish will continue to not be inspected by any US agency. Though every fish processor will be required to keep ongoing records of safety procedures peculiar to its operation, no regulations whatsoever will pertain to the 100,000 fishing vessels that bring seafood to market. The new system is considered an improvement--from the standpoint of the consumer--over the previous one
The USDA does not inspect for trichinosis in pork. It is widely known that pork must be thoroughly cooked before eating. Still, about 4% of Americans have trichinella worms in their muscles which can periodically cause flu-like symptoms and even death
Trade in animal food puts needless pressure on world governments straining to get along. For instance, the US allows the implantation of hormones into beef cattle. For this reason, since the late 1980s, the European Union has banned all imports of US beef. With the advent of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), the USDA has vowed to step up pressure on the EU to force it to accept US beef. The controversy could possibly even have to be settled by the Geneva-based World Trade Organization%26#039;s dispute settlement body. A similar scenario between the US and Russia with respect to poultry was being played out at press-time. Intense pressure from the poultry industry was put on the USDA and even Vice President Gore to intervene when all poultry imports were rejected outright by Russia due to safety concerns.
More than a third of the veal calves tested in a 1995 undercover investigation done by the Humane Farming Association came up positive for clenbuterol--an acutely toxic and illegal animal drug. Subsequently it was found that many veal producers in the US had knowingly purchased and used the drug for their herds over a five-year period. This in itself is frightening; but worse is the revelation that the FDA and the USDA worked to protect the veal industry from scandal by maintaining a coverup about the clenbuterol use of which it became aware.
Poultry processors are not required by the USDA to check for salmonella bacteria in poultry. A 1978 USDA rule still in effect accepts a %26quot;chill tank%26quot; bath for bird carcasses as a sufficient counter-measure. Dunking a chicken carcass through this bath, now known as the %26quot;fecal soup,%26quot; has been likened to a rinse in your toilet. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest, 25% of all chicken sold in the US carry the salmonella bacteria--a conservative estimate. The USDA says that salmonella poisoning may be responsible for as many as 4 million illnesses and 3 thousand deaths per year.

Is it possible to love men and women who happened to be Muslims and at the same time to hate Islam?
154>My friend had a skin cancer spot on her right shoulder blade close to the spine. I showed it to her in the mirror, she went to a doctor, and had it removed. She is fine now.
I am showing Muslims what that they can not see because of their upbringing. It is in Quran and Hadith. Everyone else can see it: Intolerance, World conquest, Incitement to violence, abuse of women, pedophilia.
But most people don’t bother to check these quotes, and claim that “this is all lies”. Quran quotes can be found on http://www.faithfreedom.org/Quran.htm

i am born as a Muslim but if you mean that i never inquire about my religion then you are mistaken and you are wrong. i am 18 now and I’ve been inquiring about my religion since i was young and i still do. i am not a Muslim because i was born a Muslim nor because my parents told me to. i am Muslim because i asked, researched and found it to be the truth. Islam is not a religion of “blind faith” either but is a religion that strongly calls on man to use his logic, reasoning and intellect. Allah in the Quran stresses the importance for people to think, to reason and to use their mind and intellect. The word “mind” or “reasoning” is mentioned 49 times in the Quran (in Arabic Ta’qiloon 24 times, Ya’qiloon 22 times, and A’qal, Na’qil and Ya’qil one time each). Also Allah refers to “people of understanding” 16 times in the Quran (in Arabic Ulu Al-AlBab or Uli Al-Albab). Allah also refers to “those of intelligence” two times in Chapter 20 by the Arabic term Uli Al-Nuha
Allah praises people who use their mind:
«%26quot;Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding - Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], “Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire.”» [3:190]
About the Quran, Allah Says:
«%26quot;[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they (i.e. people) might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded.%26quot;» [38:29]
In the Quran, the words that can be formed from the term “know” or “knowledge” (root %26#039;elm in Arabic) is to be found 865 times. In one verse Allah says:
«%26quot;Are those who know equal to those who do not know? Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.%26quot;» [39:9]
Also:
«%26quot;And so those who were given knowledge may know that It (i.e. the Quran) is the truth from your Lord and [therefore] believe in it, and their hearts humbly submit to it. And indeed is Allah the Guide of those who have believed to a straight path.%26quot;» [2:54]
On the other hand, the Quran strongly rejects certain mentalities that are driven by myths, illusions, absurdities, ignorance, blind imitation of others, assumption (conjecture), prejudice, whims and desires. In fact, Allah in the Quran confirms that most people on earth have gone astray because they follow assumption, conjecture and ignorance. Allah says:
«%26quot;And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah. They follow not except assumption, and they are not but falsifying (out of ignorance, conjecture and assumption).%26quot; » [6:116]

Does anti-matter exist?
153>Has it been proven to exist naturally? Has it been created in a lab somewhere?
I believe anti-matter to not only have different symmetry from matter (after all, that is a broad subject and matter comes in every shape and size, the fact that it has shape and size gives it mass making it matter) but to have the exact opposite behavior of matter, thermodynamically (matter, as it absorbs heat becomes less dense and increases in volume. as it emits heat, becomes more dense with less volume- i could be getting confused but im pretty sure that%26#039;s how it works), magnetically , anything that would completely reverse any action of the correlating amount of matter to the point of it simply not existing anymore.
Also, could antimatter be (for example) used to treat cancers, viruses, bacterial infections any other ailment that involves matter that needs to be deleted from the body (if the corresponding amt anti-matt adminstrd to the prob site) ?
Reply:Yes, and yes.
High energy particle collider, smashing particles traveling at relativistic speed onto a target, will created a shower of new particles, some of those being positron (anti-electron), some being anti-quarks (leading to anti-proton, among others)
Anti matter behave like normal matter in every way, except for the electrical charge. Anti matter reacts to gravity the same way as normal matter, anti matter that would be made of anti particle to form anti atoms would still reach chemically with other anti atoms (of we could keep them from coming into contact with normal matter and annihilate themselves in the process) to form anti-molecules.
The large hadron collider, which should be activated next year, is designed to create anti-particle, store them in a ring, and accelerate them against accelerated normal matter.
Anti matter is not specific about what it would react and annihilate with. A positron will annihilate any electron it encounters, no matter what that electrons is doing at that time (being part of an atom, being free in an electron beam, whatever).
Reply:Yes, it occurs naturally, although not for very long usually. It has been created in labs many times in many places. Antimatter has opposite additive quantum numbers (like charge) from regular matter. It does not have opposite thermodynamic behavior the way you suggest. Using antimatter to annhilate stuff in your body would be gross overkill and would have side-effects far worse than the benefit. It would be far better to just burn away or cut away a tumor than to try to annhilate it with antimatter, which would make a big mess of you on the way in and then shower you in gamma rays as it annhilated everything in its path.
Reply:Antimatter is the term used to describe particles of matter that have the opposite electric charge compared to normal matter. It does not say anything about thermodynamic properties, magnetic properties and so forth. It%26#039;s just that the charge is opposite. So, for example, if you had an electron with a positive charge it would be an anti-electron. That particle has been shown to exist for small amounts of time before it is destroyed, and it%26#039;s typically called a positron.
Here%26#039;s a site that talks about it:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antimatter
Reply:If it did not exist, there would be no matter. Think about it within the context of our definition of matter(solid, liquid %26amp; gas). The real proof is in a deeper question; is matter a partical or a wave. If anti-matter did not exist, we would have no event horizons, stars that go nova, or Black Holes. We suggest that the essence of anti-matter will be discovered and proven not to be in our further exploration of Black Holes.
Reply:Anti-matter has been produced in labs. It%26#039;s hard to produce in large quantities, so as far as I know, we haven%26#039;t tested how it behaves thermodynamically, and we probably won%26#039;t be able to for a long time, although I think we have tested it for gravity, and it falls the same direction normal matter does. As for using it as medicine, definitely not. Antimatter is annihilated as soon as it touches any normal matter, so it would be gone before it reached the infection. Even if you did get it into contact with the infection, both the matter and the antimatter are turned into huge amounts of energy, which would damage a large part of the body if it was small enough and messily destroy the patient if it wasn%26#039;t. It would be like using tiny nuclear bombs as medicine.
Reply:Yes it exists, and yes it has been created or observed in the laboratory environment, in very tiny quantities.
Antimatter is very difficult to deal with because it annihilates with normal matter with an E=MC2 sized energy output. Depite the huge energy production of nuclear reactors and hydrogen bombs, the mass converted is a tiny fraction of the total mass involved. In a matter-antimatter reaction 100% conversion occurs, so that if we could somehow completely mate a pepper seed with its antimatter cousin the result would be staggering (actual numbers left as an exercise for the student).
Using antimatter for medical or other purposes would depend, mostly, on ways to contain it, since it could not be allowed to contact normal matter. Even air molecules on the way from the instrument to the site of the cancer, etc. (and what we call vacuum is full of them) would be a huge problem.

Is 205 mgs/day of Oxycodone too much for a male who does not have cancer nor ever had surgery-only joint pain?
152>Combined with Valium, Elavil, Neurontin, high blood pressure medicine (Tarka), Colace %26amp; previously taken anti-depressants such as Cymbalta and Wellbutrin--- wouldn%26#039;t 205 mgs. of Oxycodone be considered %26quot;too much%26quot; for a 45 yr. old male who is only experiencing shoulder %26amp; knee joint pain? No cancer or surgery, just pain from joints (scheduled for, but not had joint replacement surgery). Wouldn%26#039;t this amount of Oxycodone per day cause a fatal overdose?
Reply:Damn - who%26#039;s your doctor - I need to go to him. Yes 205mg of perocet is a lot but the real problem is mixing it with the valium and other anti-depressant. I would be worried I would go into a drug coma and stop breathing. Be very careful with these mixes.
Reply:First off, even with someone who has been prescribed Oxycodone, mixing with all of that can be very dangerous. Oxycodone is also very habit forming, and to much can cause serious breathing complications or worse. NOBODY should be taking a narcotic like this unless it is prescribed to them, with all other meds and physical conditions taken into consideration. Inform this man, that the best thing for joint pain would be a pain releiver/anti-inflamatory. Strat with 800mg Ibuprofren every 6 hours, if that isn%26#039;t working, then go to the DR.!
Reply:First of all and this is comming from a person who was totally crushed in a car accident in 2004..how long have you been taking all this Oxycodone..If you just started taking it STOP because no good can come of this. The chances of overdose are not high but the real problem you are going to face is ADDICTION my friend.OXYCODONE is very addictive and you%26#039;ll soon notice that 204mlg per day is not enough and that will go up and up and up.and eventually your doctor will start to give you hard time because your at his office every second week needing more..and then when you don%26#039;t have anymore you will go through a withdrawl week from hell.PLEASE do yourself a favor and be strong live with the pain ..like i%26#039;m doing now.and i need a new knee and new hips and a new elbow. If you have to take medication for pain try Lyrica it%26#039;s a neuroblocker .it stops the pain receptors in the brain from being activated and in turn you don%26#039;t feel the pain in your joints ..and your not taking high levels of opiotes that are eating away at your liver and stopping you from being able to go to the bathroom..unless you take MORE medication just to be able to poop..NOTHING GOOD CAN COME FROM PAIN PILLS..take it from me who has been there.good luck my friend and god help you.
Reply:I%26#039;m familiar with Oxycodone, Neurontin, Cymbalta and Wellbutrin. The amount of Oxycodone shouldn%26#039;t present any problem. If 205 Mg is a starting off amount, its a fair amount, but if the pain is high, its reasonable. Colace or (alternative Miralax) is usually needed with Oxycodone type drugs.
Good luck with your surgery. You are pretty young for replacement, but it sounds like it certainly is needed.
Reply:It depends on the person and their tolerance. For an opiate naive person, yes, it would be. But for a chronic pain patient it could be just enough. I%26#039;m a 26 year old female, who weighs 150 pounds, and I take 120 mgs of Oxycodone a day--80 mgs extended release and 40 mgs immediate release-- plus 2 mgs of Ativan at bedtime every day and I add around 200 micrograms of immediate release Fentanyl approximately 3 times a week as needed.
Joint pain can be extremely debilitating. You can%26#039;t judge what is too much pain medication based on the fact that the patient %26quot;just%26quot; has joint pain. Everyone%26#039;s pain tolerance is different. My husband takes the same amount of Oxycodone as me-- 80 mgs extended release, 40 mgs immediate release-- every day for pain in his knee. He is 28 and weighs 165 lbs. and has also had 2 seperate nerve blocks in the knee. His pain is still severe enough that he needs his medication and he still has pain at a level of about a 2 or 3 sometimes. You can%26#039;t judge how much pain medication a person needs based on where the pain is. You CERTAINLY can%26#039;t judge how much pain they%26#039;re having just because they don%26#039;t have cancer. Neither I nor my husband has cancer either. Extremely severe, debilitating pain can come from other sources than cancer. It%26#039;s up to the doctor. Clearly the patient is being followed by a doctor, and he or she is the ONLY one who should judge if the person is taking too much medication. It%26#039;s disrespectful and rude to judge a patient%26#039;s pain medication intake when you are not a doctor. Pain in and of itself can be a disease, and it can be as debilitating-- and as fatal-- as cancer. Also, addiction is a behavior issue, characterized by compulsively drug seeking and continuing to take the medication when it is not needed or when it has caused negative conssequences for the patient or his friends and family. Dependance occurs when you take a medication for an extended period of time, and it occurs with pretty much ANY medication. A diabetic depends on insulin for their diabetes, but are THEY called addicts? Of course not. A pain patient is doing the same thing, and we are judged and called junkies just for taking medication to treat out condition. This type of discrimination by people who do not understand what it is to need medication just to be able to do normal, every day things is disgusting and unfair.
Reply:I take 20 mg Oxycodone every 4 hours as needed, for chronic pain and I just recently had my second kidney surgery this week, I don%26#039;t think 205 mgs is too much, if you feel bad side effects from it, it is possible it is too much. I would talk to your doctor and not ask anyone on here since only your doctor can give you professional advice and none of us are doctors. but if your pain is controlled and you are comfortable I would see no problem with taking that much as long as your doctor says it is safe..I was switched over from Percocet that has Tylenol because of liver toxicity, the only thing my doctor warned me about with higher doses is breathing problems, addiction, constipation, dizziness, nausea, and being more drowsy.
Reply:It all depends on your tolerance. If you have never taken opiate analgesics before then 205 mg could make you overdose, even if taken over the length of a day. If you%26#039;ve been taking opiates long enough, then 205 mg might not give you any relief. This really isn%26#039;t for you to decide, the doctor should make any decisions like that. You%26#039;re doctor should know about your history of medication before he prescribes you anything as powerful as oxycodone hydrochloride. Even if that amount didn%26#039;t kill you, it would not be a very pleasant day for you. You would be horribly tired and you would deff puke the first couple of times.
As far as the drug interactions, the valium and the oxycodone both depress the respiratory system and when given in high doses could cause respiratory failure. As far as the other drugs, I wouldn%26#039;t feel comfortable giving you advice because i%26#039;m not experienced in those. But if your doctor perscribed all of this to be taken together then it should be safe. But double check with your doctor first.

Question for Non-Smokers ---- Where is the proof that second hand smoke causes cancer.?
151>There is no proof.
Just like there is no proof that other things cause cancer such as:
Tv Dinners
Cell Phone Radiation
Hair Color
Broccoli (and yes, I saw on the news once that it may cause it)
EMF and RF radiation from electronics
SMOKING
Alcohol
Laundry detergent
Additives and perfumes in personal hygiene products --ahem.. such as perfume
Preservatives in food
Steroids and hormones in meat
Paint fumes
Stress from things such as work, family problems and NOISY screaming KIDS IN RESTAURANTS
and what about inhaling dry wall dust, cat litter, baby powder, comet, flour, etc. Hmmm.
Well .. you get the point. But how can people single ONE thing out and say that it is hazardous to their health when they don%26#039;t even know for sure? If there was proof for all of these causes for cancer, they could find a cure. I don%26#039;t buy it. It%26#039;s not harmful. People have smoked for centuries.
The anti-smoking crowd needs some of their rights taken away so they can know just how it feels.

Reply:Well first off i%26#039;m a former three pack a day guy. So was my father. My father worked his a$$ off his whole life only to have the cigarettes he loved snuff his life out less than a year before he was due to retire.
I can tell you from first hand knowledge that the kind of cancer smoking gives you is a pretty much unique kind of cancer, it%26#039;s small cell cancer. This type of cancer is far more agressive than other types of cancer, does not respond to treatment as well, and is far more likely to return after they kill it with chemotherapy. If you have that type, it%26#039;s a pretty good bet that it came from tobacco, and there have been plenty of non-smokers die from it.
You can minimize the harm cigarettes all you want, but let me tell you what convinced me. I watched my dad, who was a 220 pound guy that lifted weights every day, get turned into a 90 pound shell of what he once was. The tumors in his brain prevented him from speaking, and paralyzed his entire left side. I sat by his bedside for 3 days as he slowly drowned from lungs that slowly stopped functioning. I will never forget the horrible look on his face as he drew his last breath, and how they wheeled him out of that hospital room an hour later with that god awful expression frozen on his face.
I%26#039;m not going out like that. I hope you won%26#039;t either. Put those awful cigarettes away.
Reply:My grandfather signed up in WW2 and started smoking to cope with the stress.
He died from Lung Cancer when I was 5. Don%26#039;t give me this crap about it not being harmful.
