How do anti-cancer drugs work? And how do they affect the cells' cycle??
5>Are you asking about chemotherapy? Different chemo drugs work in different ways. Some kill cells that replicate rapidly: because compared to most normal cells, cancer cells replicate rapidly. Some chemo drugs choke off the blood supply to tumors. Some targeted drugs bind to tumor cells to prevent them from replicating. There are probably more ways they work than that ... did you look on Wikipedia under "chemotherapy"?
Reply:I agree with the previous respondent that different chemo drugs work differently. The vast majority of older agents (still in widespread use) act against DNA. There are a variety of different ways they act, but the end result is that the cancer cell recognizes that its DNA is abnormal and destroys itself. These drugs work against any rapidly dividing cells (the idea being that DNA is more actively in use in a rapidly dividing cell). This makes sense when you consider that cancer, by definition, is a disease of rapidly dividing cells. Unfortunately, your body has lots of normal cells that divide rapidly, too, like hair, the cells lining your gut, and blood cells. This explains side effects like hair loss, mouth sores, and low blood counts, because even these good cells are destroyed by the chemo.
Newer chemo drugs may be targeted against a specific type of tumor and so, theoretically, is less toxic to the body's normal cells. The problem is that every type of tumor is so different, and it's nearly impossible to come up with a magic bullet for each one. Researchers are working hard in that direction, though.

Does anyone know of any anti cancer vitamins for dogs?
2>my dog has cancer she is a rotti. and i dont want her to die just know and i know she has a couple months to live does anyone know of any anticancer vitamins that are good for a dog?
Reply:You can help her put up a better fight by strengthening her immune system..feeding a home cooked diet, with sea kelp...
A diet of lamb, brown rice and kelp help build her immune system.
Cook the natural rice with 3 cups of water per cup of rice, and cook until all is absorbed. Grind or chop the lamb and feed it raw, mixed in the rice with 2 spoons of sea kelp, add any cooked vegetables, such as yams, carrots, green beans, celery, spinach, etc..but no onions, garlic, or tomatoes, or cabbage.
You may use lentils if you wish, in place of, or added to the rice.
This recipe will last a while, and should be fed at least twice a day, or more frequent small meals..just add the kelp, 1-2 spoons at a time, (depending on how often you feed) with each feeding, so it is never cooked.....
Most store bought meats have growth hormones, and antibiotics, given during the growing or 'finishing' feeding. but lamb is not fed that stuff.
The kelp makes a big difference.
If your dog doesn't like the rice, you can boil fresh fish (not farmed) and pour the broth over the rice.
You can warm it each feeding..
a renowned nutritionist actually cured her own cancer, and has helped many people with a similar diet..
Reply:I would ask your vet if there are any options for the dog..good luck.
Reply:No, but search on google.
Reply:I don't think there such a thing as "Anti-cancer" vitamins, if there was don't you think humans would have them?
Check with your vet for the best possible treatment, you may have to come to terms that the dog isn't going to survive the cancer

Pro lifers: are you anti-cancer treatment too?

Is cancer treatment a sin?
Reply:this is going to be a long answer so get your reading glasses:
First I'm going to get crap/thumbs down for this but who cares? I am VERY religious [I'm a Roman Catholic], with my religion, with my love of God I gained a lot of information/wisdom. I beleive that God is a being of understanding, of wisdom and of love, he knows all, understands all and sees all. I will give my life for Him that is how much i love God. that said, God is also a Father, our father and understands our circumstances, circumstances for each and everyone one of us.
that said, one a woman decides to have an abortion, she doesnt put it on a lsit of tihngs to do: do hair[check], do nails [check], get an abortion [check], buy blue dress[check], and go to party [check]. No it doesnt work like that! i beleive that people think deeply and throughoutly before geting an abortion. you see it is so easy for me to say "NO, ABORTION IS MURDER! ABORTION IS WRONG! U R SO GOING TO HELL!", no i'm not, on the contrary i try my best to understand her circumstances. God forgives all sins except the sin of blasphemy and not believing in Him. since he understands our curcumstances and HE will JUDGE us, who are we to judge others?? people who claim that others will go to hell for that have ntohing better to do but to judge. I personally dont tihnk that abortion is muder, it's funny cause some people do not beleive in abortion but beleive in the war in Iraq [ironic isnt it?]

the treatment of cancer is the removal of a mutation which will cause death. to equate that on any level with a fetus is poor logic and does not advance your argument at all.
if a pro-life person were against abortion even when carrying the baby to term would possibly (or better, probably) lead to the death of the mother, then you have a parallel case to discuss.
Reply:This is an awesome question. I am pro-choice. I would also like to know if pro lifers are against smoking and drinking because they can kill a life.
I think they would almost have to be. Sometimes a baby can be killing the mother. So in that case it is a disease and would have to be removed.

Reply:Are you really arguing that a baby and a tumor are of equal value?
Reply:I'm Pro-Life. I don't believe in sin however (how could I... I'm an atheist after all).
Treating cancer is not immoral. Independantly, the cancer cannot survive without interference. It is not a separate being, it is a part thereof, and one clearly identifiable as maladaptive (it kills, after all, and thus causes its own death).
Reply:Very good point! A friend of mine had a similar argument once with a friend of hers. My friend is unable to get pregnant so she and her husband are exploring invetro fertilization and her friend told her that she's a staunch Catholic and feels that if people are unable to have children it's because God doesn't think they should have children and they should just take the hint. My friend, after crying for 4 days, called this woman and asked why, if she felt that people should follow God's plans for them, no matter how painful, she had used chemotherapy to fight her mother's cancer in an effort to keep her alive. Surely, that too, is contradictory to God's plan, isn't it?
People will come up with amazing excuses to support their own arguments, no matter how absurd.
Reply:I am pro-choice, but your question lacks logic. You assume that cancer cells and the cells of a potential human being are the same in a strictly biological sense, but you neglect to address what happens to them both as they progress. True, both cancers and embryos begin as bundles of cells that make up living tissue. However, a cancer, no matter how long it is left untreated, will always be a cancer. It doesn't have the potential to become anything else. On the other hand, the cells and tissue that make up a fetus will eventually become a human being. Thus the two are not equal in terms of biologic potential.
Reply:As long as your not killing an unborn human infant to heal yourself with this "treatment"...it would...ummm...NOT be.

Breast cancer?
551>What are the chances of a 13 year old who:
-gets 7 ~ 9 hours of sleep each night
-eats fairly healthy
-works out about for 30 minutes to an hour every one to two days
getting breast cancer in a family that does NOT have a history of breast cancer?
Reply:13 years and worried about cancer! Don't.
Reply:It's highly doubtful she will get breast cancer at this point in her life; but cancer is not bias. It can strike anyone at anytime.
Reply:the chances are low but does not mean zero. For your info, even men suffers from breast cancer.
i would think one should go for Breast self examination by a doctor to confirm the lump. have a biopsy done to confirm the result before a diagnosis is able to made. You could chose mammogram which is a non invasive test
